Every business is powered by a team of employees which means that in order to succeed you need to look after your staff. Unfortunately, many business owners make the same mistakes when it comes to their employees and this can be extremely detrimental to the business. Additionally, this can create a negative atmosphere in the workplace which can make it a difficult place to work. Here are a few of the most common mistakes to avoid:
Not Noticing & Praising Good Work
Everyone needs to feel important and valued particularly in the workplace. When an employee feels that their hard work is not noticed or appreciated it can impact morale and give them no reason to work hard. Be sure to provide regular and honest praise for good work and it can be helpful to give this praise in public (constructive feedback should be given in private).
Lack of Events
In order for employees to enjoy their role and to work well with their colleagues, they need to spend time together in a non-work related environment. Regular events where they are encouraged to socialize and relax without worrying about work can boost morale, develop strong relationships and help to develop a team-based mentality. Most businesses offer a Christmas party which is a good start, but you should be hosting regular events throughout the year for your team too.
Lack of Perks
To maximize productivity your employees will need to have incentives to work hard. This can be achieved with perks, such as Perkbox – a UK based company reward system which provides employees with various discounts and freebies for working hard.
Lack of Trust
It is important for employees to feel that they are trusted so that they can carry out their role with confidence. Micromanaging is the most common symptom of a lack of trust which can be frustrating for staff. Employees should be trusted fully to carry out their work and their opinion should be valued.
Over Friendly or Too Distant
One of the biggest challenges that bosses face is finding the balance between being overly friendly and too professional. It is important that you are not too demanding, mean and distant, but equally, you must remember that you are the boss and they work for you. Try to be the best leader possible and avoid worrying about personal relationships.
When you look after your staff and avoid the above mistakes it should help you to run a successful business. Not only this, but it can create a positive working atmosphere where everyone works well together and people enjoy coming into work each day. This can take time to cultivate, but with a little patience and following the above advice you will soon find your staff to be responsive.
