When venturing out into the world of starting a small business, the most important and recognizable feature that people will associate with you and your business is the business’s name. Having a catchy name that sticks in people’s minds can be the difference between making a successful and sustainable living and a failed project. But how do you create that perfect name that will entice people to give you their patronage? Here are a few steps involved in creating the perfect name.

Make It Catchy

Think about what catches your eye when you see the name of a small business. They aren’t huge, international companies, so they rely on having a name that looks or sounds completely different from anything you’ve heard before. One way to do this is to use world play. Some of the best vape stores use this tactic by having their names be puns related to smoking or vaping. Some more options include using acronyms, which can leave people wondering what the letters stand for, using words from different languages, which can create a sense of mysteriousness or exoticness, and making an obviously intentional spelling or grammar mistake, which will make the name stand out because it looks slightly off.

Keep It Simple

A name that is too long and complicated will not stick in a customer’s mind. “Bob’s Quality Gardening Tools and Accessories” is much harder to remember and much less interesting than simply, “Bob’s Tools”. This change eliminates unnecessary words that clutter the name with too much information, and too much information is another thing you generally want to avoid in your business’s name. If Bob gets lucky, and his business begins to grow, he doesn’t have much room to expand his inventory because the name has limited him to gardening supplies. Using the other name, he opens up the door to sell all kinds of tools, not just those related to gardening.

Check Its Availability

You don’t want your business to share its name with another. This can create confusion, especially if you live close by or are competitors. Before finalizing the name, do a deep Google search to find any businesses that have a name similar to yours. If you find one, consider changing the name. You can check business registries, and even register your business in databases around the internet. A good catchy, name is one of the first steps on your business’s path to success. Carefully selecting a name that represents what your company is and will be memorable for your customers is important, and now you know where to begin
