HVLS fans are used industry wide to help maintain a certain temperature in warehouses and agricultural faculties. Refresh Fans are known to help with effective circulation and helps in vastly improving the production yields of both livestock and crops as well as keeping dry products restored. While buying a fan the first; the foremost thing to look for is the performance and efficiency aspect. In this blog we will be evaluating a fan on various parameters to give you an idea about how you can evaluate the performance of your fan effectively:
Motor Input Power at Max Speed (W)
The Input power of your HVLS fan is a direct indicator of the efficiency of your motor and drive system. A geared motor provides 60% efficiency whereas a direct drive motor offers 85% efficiency. The airflow of the fan is not in direct proportion to the input power of the motor. This means that a higher input power does not necessarily mean more airflow.
Motor Output Torque (Nm)
The parameter of the blade also plays a role in achieving its required speed. By using lighter blades, you can effectively lower the energy consumption but they do not necessarily promise the same airflow. The blade profiles are standardized by the HVLS industry to offer better efficiency of performance. Conclusively, Airflow is proportional to Motor Output Power. Bigger blades will need more torque than smaller blades.
Weight (Kg)
HVLS fans equipped with geared motors weigh as much as 350 lbs, which is almost double as fans with direct drive fans. So, by this angle, a geared fan can pose a safety issue as it has heavy metal hanging from the ceiling. However, you should always confirm the weight of the fan from the shopper because not all direct drive HVLS fans are created equally.
Sound level (dB)
This test is not performed by most companies, but it can play a crucial role in your everyday life because who would want a noisy fan. The geared fans tend to be noisier than direct drive once and after a period of time, it can be unbearable. Regardless of the motor type, you should always test your fan for a noise test before purchasing it.
Warranty
A great warranty always makes a great case for your fans. You can also check if you can get an extended warranty on your fan to have better peace of mind. Direct drive fans can last you a lifetime, but this cannot be guaranteed in the case of geared fans.
Air Flow (CFM)
Air Flow numbers are vital in the case of fans. But most companies chose to not reveal them. Instead, air velocity numbers are used by them which are meaningless for the users. Always try to get the airflow numbers from your manufacturer to check the efficiency of your fan.
