As a marketing consultant who has worked on SEO campaigns for 10 years, I’ve developed a great methodology to help business owners increase their online exposure through search engines.
Key to this is understanding the search terms that potential customers type into Google. Let’s take a look at the highest-volume keywords and some of the related keyword clusters that you can use in your own law firm’s SEO.
First, what is SEO?
SEO, or Search Engine Optimisation, is the process of improving your presence on search engines like Google. The goal is to have your website show as many relevant keywords as possible. The higher the better.
Key to this is keyword research. It’s a bit like question and answer.
What question is someone asking and what’s the right answer? What keyword is someone searching for, and what information or service do they want?
Why keyword selection is vital
Choosing random keywords or keywords that have informational intent won’t work. A keyword research tool like Ahrefs or SEMRush will qualify the exact legal keywords people search with and the monthly search volume.
Additionally, being a service-based business, you want to target transactional and commercial law keywords.
They are keywords like ‘family law firm’,’small business lawyer’, and ‘lawyer in Sydney’.
Take, for example, this family law service page on Randle & Taylor’s website.

It is optimised for family law keywords and specifically for the location-based ‘Family Lawyers Adelaide’ keyword. This is a pretty hard keyword to rank for, as Ahrefs estimated monthly search volume of 800, with an estimated number of 17 backlinks being required to rank on Google page 1 for this keyword.
What are the highest volume legal keywords?
We’ll use keywords from the USA where search volumes are the highest. The total number of keywords with ‘lawyer’ in them is 806,144. The total number of keywords with ‘law’ in them is a staggering 1,836,070.
Right now, as of October 2024, here are the top 10 legal keywords, with matching monthly search volumes:
- Lawyer – 104000
- lincoln lawyer – 99000
- lincoln lawyer cast – 66000
- rocket lawyer – 59000
- personal injury lawyer – 55000
- car accident lawyer – 53000
- the lincoln lawyer – 49000
- lincoln lawyer season 3 – 42000

You can see some keywords are not relevant to your law firm’s SEO marketing. These include keywords related to the TV show ‘Lincoln Lawyer’. So we will remove these keywords from the list to give us a more relevant and useful list.
