New research reveals SQL, Python, and Cloud platforms lead tech hiring trends in Australia.
While artificial intelligence continues to dominate headlines, new research by Australian IT desktop training provider Dynamic Web Training reveals that traditional, foundational tech skills remain the most in-demand in 2025.
The analysis of thousands of job ads on Indeed.com found that SQL is the top-demanded tech skill, appearing in 780 active listings nationwide. Cloud platforms Azure (750) and AWS (735) closely follow, alongside Python, tied at 735 listings.
“Despite all the buzz around AI, employers are hiring for stability,” said Ali Noorani, a Certified Trainer and Data Analyst at Dynamic Web Training. “They need people who can manage infrastructure, automate systems, and keep operations running smoothly. That means traditional skills are more relevant than ever.”

The Message for Job Seekers in Tech: Fundamentals First
The message for Australians pursuing careers in technology is clear: don’t get distracted by the noise, focus on the basics.
While AI and Web3 continue to gain traction in media, employers remain focused on skills that ensure reliability, scalability, and performance. These include database management, secure cloud infrastructure, and automation pipelines.
“Whether you’re configuring AWS environments, writing Python scripts, or managing SQL databases, these are the hands-on capabilities companies are hiring for right now,” Ali Noorani added.
AI Skills Appear in 45% Fewer Job Ads Than Core Tech Skills in 2025
While AI continues to dominate headlines, job market data tells a more measured story.
Dynamic Web Training’s analysis shows that while interest in AI is gaining momentum, most employers seek broad foundational knowledge, not just tool-specific expertise.
Machine Learning leads AI-related hiring demand with 435 job ads, followed by general terms like Artificial Intelligence (330) and Generative AI (180).

Interestingly, specific tools like ChatGPT (30 listings) and Claude (15) are still relatively niche in hiring demand, suggesting employers favour adaptive problem solvers over tool-specific operators.
“A lot of professionals panic when they hear ‘AI’ and think they need to master every new tool,” said Ali Noorani. “But what we’re seeing is a demand for people with strong fundamentals and broad understanding, not just tool-specific credentials.”
“If you’re in tech, or want to be, start by building skills in Python, machine learning, and data science. They’re the most direct pathways to future-ready roles.”
