There is a background check that is referred to as a DBS check that is specifically looking at a person’s criminal record. It stands for the disclosure and barring service, one that is designed to help protect employers from people that may actually be criminals. No one is ever going to volunteer this information to you. It is important that you do these checks to make sure that they are a safe person to employ. If you have multiple employees at your facility, the last thing that you want to do is introduce a person that could be dangerous. There are other reasons that you will want to use a DBS check. Here are the basics of what this will actually do and how you can get it done.
Three Types Of DBS Checks
The first and primary reason for these background checks is to look at the criminal record of any individual. It is vital that this is done so that suitable candidates, for any job, can be employed to work with certain types of people. For example, if you are hiring someone that is going to be working with children, you definitely need to have this done to make sure that they will be okay to work with vulnerable kids. Second, there is the standard DBS check which is going to go a little more in-depth. Finally, the enhanced DBS check is available, but only to employers that actually requested it. It is typically done on behalf of the applicant, just to make sure that they are fully qualified for the job that you are providing.
How Long Does It Take To Do?
The length of time that it will take is often dependent upon how many people are available to undergo this type of background check and how comprehensive each individual is in terms of their past. For example, if an individual is middle-aged, and they have been in one spot for most of their life, they will likely have very little information. However, if someone is traveling quite a bit, whether because of certain conditions, or their employment, it may take a lot of time to find out information from each of the places they were living. Overall, it can take anywhere from a few days, to a few weeks, to complete this process which is vitally important when trying to maintain stability and safety at your place of business.
How Do You Order One?
You can order these by simply calling a company that offers them. These are typically businesses that specialize in providing different types of background checks. They may work directly with law enforcement, or if you can find one that is a business in and of itself, you can quickly determine how much each one is. Choose the one that offers the most comprehensive and cost-effective package, and preferably the one that can do the job in the shortest period of time.
Most people that go through these background checks are going to do fine. However, there will always be a few that will have a criminal record. You need to determine if that criminal record is going to compromise their ability to not only do their job but to keep people safe, you may not want to have certain individuals at your place of business. Whenever you are working with kids, you definitely want to have this done. You can find out more information about the basic, standard, and enhanced DBS background checks that all of your employees should go through if they are a new hire.
