Information technology is constantly developing, and as we get ready for the Internet of Things and 5G, we are entering a new level of global connectivity. However, some people wonder how and when information technology began and if you are one of those, here is a brief timeline of the development of IT.

  • 1936 The Turing Machine – The Turing machine was Alan Turing’s brainchild, a basic computer that calculated numbers. This is generally accepted as the start of the computer science field when scientists began to look at information as data that can be divided into small numbers.
  • 1939 The Birth of Hewlett-Packard – The two friends, William Hewlett and David Packard, began a partnership that continues to this day; the company invented the audio oscillator, which was used by Walt Disney in the making of films.
  • World War II – The Second World War boosted the development of computing, as both sides strived to gain an advantage and development was made in data encryption, as each side tried to communicate in secret. The Germans were the first to build a computer that could remember 64 characters and was programmable, which was named the Z3 Electric Computer.
  • 1947 The Birth of Transistors – The telephone company Bell invented transistors to add power to electronic equipment. This won them the Nobel Prize, a major achievement at that time.
  • 1948 The First Computer Program – Tom Kilburn was the first person to create a program that could be stored on a computer; 2,048 bits was the machine’s capacity, although loading took a few hours.
  • 1958 The Birth of the Silicon Chip – Kilby & Noyce created the first silicone chip, and that was a game-changer, bringing the ability to store onboard data. Of course, the chipsets we have today are far advanced, with multiple cores and with the best IT consulting in Vegas, you can always be sure to have the best IT hardware.
  • 1970 The Birth of the DRAM Chip – The Dynamic Random Access Memory (DRAM) chip was invented by a new company called Intel.
  • 1971 The Arrival of the Floppy Disk – Created by IBM, this device enabled users to store data and carry it on their person. Click here for information about green technology.
  • 1974 The Personal Computer – The very first PC was introduced, called Altair, which was a self-built computer that cost $400, and thousands of machines were sold.
  • 1990 The emergence of HTML – This language enabled the World Wide Web to be created.
  • 1991 Microsoft Windows 3.0 – Bill Gates created Microsoft, and the company launched Windows 3.0, which ran on a DOS system.
  • 1995 Digital Video Disc – The DVD could store a lot more data than the Compact Disc (CD), and for the first time, we could watch HD movies on a DVD player.

Fast forward to today, and we have Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and super-fast Internet, while the Internet of Things is just around the corner, which will take us into a new dimension of digital connectivity.
