Champions Speakers has signed Kirsty Murphy MBE, the RAF’s first and only female Red Arrows display pilot, strengthening its roster with a speaker whose story cuts through far beyond aviation.
Kirsty is one of the UK’s most compelling keynote speakers, combining frontline military experience with a clear, practical perspective on leadership, resilience, and performance under pressure.
Her drive to join the RAF was shaped early, but not in the way most careers begin. At just 13 years old, her father was captured and tortured for six weeks during the first Gulf War. It was a defining moment that demanded resilience at a young age and helped shape the mindset that would later underpin her career.
Rather than deter her, it strengthened her resolve and now forms the basis of her highly respected keynote speeches and cemented her as one of the UK’s leading motivational speakers.
“There are so many moments that make up anyone’s life,” she said. “From those early days spending time on my dad’s squadron, through to not getting into the RAF on my first application, and then on to my first operational mission. The moments that challenged me the most are the ones that gave me the resilience and determination to achieve what I did.”
After qualifying as a pilot in 1998, she went on to fly the Tornado GR4 on operations before moving into senior roles in fast jet training and capability. In 2009, she joined the Red Arrows, entering one of the most demanding and visible teams in the world.
“It is such an intense selection process, with a long wait to find out the result,” she said. “I remember calling my dad to tell him I had been successful, and that moment will stay with me forever. We could barely speak.”
Her time with the Red Arrows brought not only professional challenge, but a new level of visibility and responsibility.
“I had not fully anticipated the strength of public support for the Red Arrows until I joined,” she explained. “It was an incredible honour to wear the famous red flying suit, but it also made me think more about how I could use the experience to raise aspirations, particularly for young people considering careers in aviation and STEM.”
Since leaving the RAF after 17 years of service, Kirsty has built a portfolio career that includes working as a senior aviation consultant with Connected Places Catapult and serving as an aviation ambassador for the Department for Transport. Alongside this, her speaking has become a central focus.
Reflecting on that transition and signing with Champions Speakers, based in Loughborough, she said: “Joining Champions has been an unexpected pleasure. I was not sure what to expect from a speaker bureau, but from my first visit I knew it was the right place for me to take the next step with my speaking career.”
Her talks focus on helping individuals and organisations perform in uncertain and high-pressure environments, drawing directly from her experience in roles where decisions carry real consequences.
“I am very impact focused,” she said. “Every time I step on stage, I want to connect with the individuals in the audience and make a difference to how they think about their work or their life.”
That message is resonating more than ever in the current climate.
“There is a lot happening globally that affects how we all feel at work and at home,” she said. “Organisations are having to adapt quickly to technology and economic challenges, and people often feel less secure than they used to. That is why themes like change and performance really resonate.
“A truly impactful keynote needs to be authentic and relaxed. You need to capture attention early, take people on a journey, and leave them with something that makes them think differently. I like to use humour to help the audience relax, and to feel connected to me and to each other; but the goal is making the serious messages land.”
