Many of today’s employees have a cynical attitude towards the companies they work for. They assume that they are using them for their productivity and that they don’t care. While one part of that sentence is true, the other part isn’t. Every business still has a human element, no matter how mercantile it might appear on the outside. People are always still involved.
Furthermore, if you’re an entrepreneur, and you can convince your employees that you have their best interests at heart, then they’re much more likely to stay with you. They’ll view you as a sincere employer and will be less willing to leave and risk going to another company
Get to know them as people
One of the easiest and lowest-cost ways to convince employees that you care is simply to get to know them as people. Once you understand who they are, you can have a much better relationship with them that goes much deeper.
A lot of companies simply put people into roles and expect them to function like robots, but that’s not how people work. Individual employees need relationships with other colleagues, and they need to feel like their lives outside of work also matter to the company. When you get to know people, it makes them feel seen and valued. This makes them more loyal.
Listen actively
It’s also a good idea to listen actively to your employees. The more you can give them the sense that you’re taking into account what they’re saying, the less likely they are to leave, which increases your turnover costs.
As a manager, you can ask employees what you can do to support them better. You can also ask them if there’s anything getting in the way of them doing better work, and then look for ways to remove the problem. When you make listening a habit, it builds trust and safety. Workers feel like they can come forward with issues that they’re facing and get real resolutions.
Show you care about their well-being
Another way to demonstrate that you care about your employees is to show them that you are interested in their well-being. For example, you might offer flexible hours or avoid emailing them during less urgent periods.

Invest in their growth
Finally, you can convince employees that you care by investing in their growth. Most employees simply want to get a promotion so they can have a better pension in the future. Discussing career goals with them and what they’d like to achieve with you is critical. Make this growth visible by:
- Advocating for them or sharing resources with them
- Putting them in touch with the right people
- Inviting them to networking events
- Giving them the training they need to move to the next phase in their lives
