In my professional career, I’ve worked with multiple tech companies, from startups to large multinational corporations. In recent years, as an IT Director leading an organisation with high-security requirements, I’ve had to make several critical infrastructure decisions in response to changing regulations and the wider geopolitical landscape.
However, choosing a sovereign cloud host was a decision that has really helped. In this article, I share my practical knowledge and experience with the top 3 sovereign cloud hosting services that, in my view, stand out above the rest.
#1 BlackBox Hosting
Profile
As one of the leading sovereign cloud hosts in the UK, BlackBox Hosting is my top choice by far. They’re known for private cloud hosting services but also offer sovereign hosting solutions along with managed RDS, dedicated servers, carbon-neutral hosting, and Magento servers.
Pros
Full Data Control
Companies choose sovereign clouds for one core purpose: data residency and complete data control. In our experience, BlackBox Hosting went one step further by offering genuine data sovereignty along with residency and control. They keep all data, infrastructure, and support strictly under UK jurisdiction; a must if, like us, you’re looking to stay up to date and compliant with UK GDPR and NHS DSPT.
Top-Notch Security
Any organisation requires complete, uncompromised security, especially those that are heavily regulated and handle sensitive data. Working with BlackBox Hosting not only increased our firm’s security but also helped us meet our compliance obligations.
We experienced significant benefits from their top-tier multi-layered security, which includes Fortinet Firewall, active DDoS and ransomware protection, 24/7 monitoring, and proactive alerting and mitigation. You know your business is in good hands when you have a sovereign host providing security in every layer.
High Performance & Low Latency
Using a local sovereign host is certainly better when you’re looking to prioritise uptime. But more importantly, you want a provider (for us, it was BlackBox Hosting) who can reliably deliver industry-standard guaranteed uptime and low latency. I knew I made the right choice when their UK sovereign Tier 3+ data centres delivered 99.999% uptime, low latency, and faster access speeds.
30-Day Free Hosting Trial
While BlackBox Hosting’s services checked all our boxes in terms of sovereignty, security, performance and latency, the 30-day hosting trial was an added cherry on top. Multiple testimonials underscore their solid track record, yet they offered us to try their services. We did, and we never looked back.
Cons
In terms of pricing, they don’t offer a list price as is with most sovereign hosts, but you can receive a quote by contacting their team.
Pricing
BlackBox Hosting follows a bespoke pricing model where they customise a hosting quote based on your needs. Speaking from experience, we never had to face any surprise fees or egress charges, unlike other operators.
Rating
5/5
All these pros and more make it a superlative sovereign cloud provider in my experience. I highly recommend their services.
#2 Rackspace
Profile
Rackspace Technology is a leading global name for cloud and AI solutions, also supporting businesses with UK sovereign services and sovereign public sector cloud.
Pros
Fully Managed Private Cloud
My experience with Rackspace’s managed private cloud, although brief, was good. I found it to be specially designed for UK public sector organisations for hosting data up to ‘OFFICIAL-SENSITIVE’.
Aligned with Regulations
We found Rackspace’s sovereign platform built to keep data within the UK, helping us meet the NCSC and UK regulatory requirements.
High Security
Their security is aimed at sensitive workloads with a 24×7 security operations centre, incident response, and cybersecurity resources for sensitive workloads.
Cons
Like BlackBox Hosting, Rackspace doesn’t have a public price list. However, I feel they lean more towards enterprise pricing over set pricing for their sovereign cloud services.
Rating
4 / 5
An ideal choice if you’re looking for a big global sovereign provider for your public sector organisation.
#3 OVHCloud
Profile
With EU-based infra, OVHCloud positions itself as a cloud provider supporting sovereign capabilities.
Pros
Multiple Sovereign Options
Partnering with OVHCloud meant choosing from a variety of sovereign hosting options. From Bare Metal Pod to SecNumCloud, they allow businesses to build their own sovereign clouds.
Published Price Lists
Unlike most providers, it was refreshing to see OVHCloud publish their pricing in detail for private cloud and bare metal, which made it easier to figure out our IT budgets.
Strong EU Sovereignty
OVHCloud has data centres and operations under European control with a core focus on EU data residency. This was an added advantage for my then organisation, which runs and operates across the EU.
Cons
Interface & Support
My team found their interface and UI to be a little too complex. Some public reviews also support this view.
Sophisticated Options
The sovereign cloud options can seem confusing at first, and need a second expert-backed look.
Pricing
OVHcloud offers transparent pricing in its catalogues, which makes it easy to plan budgets. But for a truly sovereign setup, I feel you may need a custom quote.
Rating
3.8/5
This is a good choice if you’re looking for an EU-level sovereign option.
Final Words
I hope this select list of providers will help you find your next sovereign cloud host. All three of these platforms have their strengths and shortcomings, with none being the perfect choice. But if I had to recommend the best one for secure, critical, and sensitive workflows, in my experience, it would be BlackBox Hosting.
However, I recommend you do your due diligence and research well before deciding on the final choice best suited for your business.
