The term “temporary employment” refers to an employment arrangement wherein a temporary worker or “temp” is contracted to perform services for a specified period. These contract workers or temps can assist you during periods of high demand or if your permanent employees are on vacation or maternity leave.

Like regular and permanent employees, temps can also perform their duties competently. Additionally, they may have the expertise for situations not covered by the company’s everyday operations. If your business, for example, is undergoing a rigorous financial audit, you can hire a temporary accountant to assist you.

Before making a job offer, it’s critical to understand the process of recruiting a temporary employee. Considering the pros and cons of hiring temporary workers must also be given much thought. So, if you’re thinking of hiring temporary workers for your business, you need to remember the following things:

1. Employment Laws Remain Unaltered

If you’re considering hiring temporary workers in an attempt to lessen operational costs, then it’s not really a viable solution. Temporary workers are still covered by worker rights laws. This means that temporary employees still enjoy the same rights and privileges as permanent employees. In other words, the minimum wage, overtime, public holiday, and vacation pay laws all remain in effect.

When recruiting temp employees, it is critical to adhere to all applicable laws. To know more about the rights of temp workers under the workers’ compensation act, this article can supply the information you need.

However, the rules are slightly different if you’re recruiting independent contractors (self-employed professionals). Independent contractors or self-employed individuals are not generally covered under worker rights laws, and their duties, rights, and obligations may vary depending on the contract that you can agree upon.

2. Temporary Workers Are Appropriate For Almost Any Job

Temp employees are now in virtually every sector and are responsible for a wide variety of tasks. As a result, employers have a great deal of discretion and temps may fill a significant portion of your organization’s open positions.

More businesses are hiring temporary workers because they can perform a variety of tasks. Naturally, temporary employees performing administrative or manual labor exist as well. Additionally, there are temps that can work in high-level positions. For example, you can hire temp staff to perform skilled work in marketing, accounting, or information technology divisions.

3. Temps Are Entitled To A Safe And Hazard-Free Workplace

Like permanent employees, temp workers are also entitled to work in a safe, healthy, and hazard-free environment and it’s still the employer’s responsibility to ensure the safety of temp employees. Hence, you must still require and provide temp workers with the necessary PPE, if needed. They must also have a safe and clean workspace to report in. These measures will assist in ensuring the safety and security of temporary and permanent employees on the job.

4. You Have The Option To Hire Temps Full-Time

Yes, you can choose to retain temps as full-time employees. It may occur if the temporary staff is exceptionally skilled, or if your business needs the additional manpower. Numerous temporary workers anticipate being offered a permanent position after their contract. You can always provide full-time jobs to temps you admire.

Advantages Of Hiring Temporary Workers

The main advantage of hiring temp workers is the flexibility of the arrangement. Hiring an employee on a temporary basis can let you test the waters and evaluate their skills, competence, and performance. And if all goes well, you can promote them to a full-time position. If not, or if the budget of the company is in dire straits, you can choose to let go of the employee when the period expires.

Disadvantages Of Hiring Temporary Workers

Hiring temps could also be costly to your business. Each new temp must be introduced to the company and trained for the job, which would cost time and resources. And due to their brief tenure, they never develop the depth of experience or work relationships that long-term hires do. In other words, all the resources and time you spend on training them will go to waste. In addition, temporary employees do not have the same level of commitment to their employer as permanent employees, knowing that they won’t stay long in the company.

Takeaway

You’ll make the best hiring decisions for your business now that you’re familiar with the fundamentals of temporary hiring, as well as the associated benefits and drawbacks. As you can see, hiring temporary workers is just as tricky as hiring permanent employees. Nonetheless, extreme caution must be exercised to avoid rushing the temporary employee recruiting process and to ensure its efficiency.
