It’s a difficult task to advise people who are about to start their own company since there are so many things that they should know. On the other hand, overwhelming them with ideas, warnings and comments might also have a completely different effect from the one you were going for.

So, what is it that each future entrepreneur needs to know, but which would not discourage them from taking the plunge? Let’s have a look at five of the most important and useful things they should know.

Someone has to be in charge

There will be situations when an executive decision will have to be made and unless there is a person in charge, your company will not be able to move forward. You should set up your business in a way that it’s clear to everyone who is in charge of what and what kind of decisions can be made by each individual while llcs provide liability protection.

You should avoid any possible situation where two people might have conflicting ideas and, consequently, an urgent decision can’t be made. Even if there are two or more co-founders, one person has to be put in charge of making final decisions. Having this problem solved before it actually happens means that no business process will be interrupted and it will be easy to establish who is accountable for the consequences of every decision.

Small vs. big wins

You should understand that even the smallest success is a success and should be treated and celebrated as such. Having a number of small victories and memories of their celebrations will help you in difficult times, which will surely come at some point.

Every time you hit an important milestone, you need to mark it and let everyone know you’ve made it with a joint effort. This will not only strengthen your employees’ loyalty, but you’ll also boost their motivation for the tasks ahead. A good leader knows how to make the most of the resources available to them.

Know every aspect of your business

You can’t possibly be an expert in all fields, but as a startup founder, you most certainly need to be aware of everything that influences the way your company works. You should be able to recognise both what needs to be done and who can do it for you. For example, if you need some kind of a surety bond, you need to know exactly what kind you need and who can issue it.

Having a trustworthy and knowledgeable accountant and legal advisors will save you a lot of stress, money and time dealing with the things that are not so strictly related to your primary activity. However, although you don’t need to know the technicalities, you still have to be on top when it comes to what needs to be done.

Love what you do

Unless you really love what you do, you probably won’t be able to give your best. As a result, the outcomes will not be as good as they could be. Eventually, you’ll become weary, disillusioned and fed up and your business will start declining quickly.

If you don’t want that to happen, make sure you choose a field you feel passionate about.

Apart from allowing you to bring out your A-game, it’ll also make your learning and professional development much more efficient and less stressful since you’ll be getting better at something you really love.

You can make money and be socially responsible

The fact that your business is generating profit should not be viewed only as a process in which a small group of people are profiting at the expense of a wider community. You can also use your resources to help socially responsible behaviour and create a much greater impact through organised campaigns.

Making money is one of the reasons you’re starting your own business and having a profit means you’ve been doing a good job so far. Being able to put it to great use which would benefit a much wider circle of people is a privilege, but also a great responsibility. Establishing partnerships with organizations that are supporting a cause you’re feeling passionate about is something you should definitely consider in your attempt to encourage socially responsible behaviour.
